Key Highlights

• Bioenergy is defined as energy derived from bio-based renewable sources such as biofuel, biogas, biomass, and other bio-organic waste. Bioenergy is a promising renewable energy source for meeting global climate change targets as well as broader environmental, social, and sustainable goals. Agricultural waste, solid waste, liquid biofuels, and other materials are utilized as feedstock in the production of bioenergy. Bioenergy has numerous advantages, including reduced landfills, increased energy reliability and security, cost savings, biodegradability, improved air quality, and others.

• The market size of the worldwide Sustainable Bioenergy Industry surpassed USD XX billion in 2022, and by 2032, it is projected to reach USD XX billion, boosting at a CAGR of XX%.

• In October 2021, EnviTec Biogas AG began operations for its biogas facility in China. Maize stover silage, turkey litter, and dairy cattle dung would be used as inputs for the 1,570 Nm3 biogas facility in Shanxi province.

• As more countries sign on to the Paris Climate Agreement, the market will benefit.  The number of countries that have signed on to the Paris Climate Change Agreement has been steadily expanding. This agreement requires countries to use more renewable energy sources in overall power generation. The use of biofuels and biogas is gaining popularity around the world as an innovative way to combat climate change, restrict GHG emissions, namely CO2 emissions, and meet Kyoto Protocol commitments. Fossil fuel emissions are the primary cause of global warming in the energy sector. Biofuels and biogas, on the other hand, emit significantly less greenhouse gas depending on the source and circumstances. This is also true for other biomass uses, such as heat generation or electricity generation from primary biomass. Other linked benefits of using biofuels include improved local air quality, trash reduction, and, in the correct circumstances, ecosystem and soil protection.

Segment Insights

By Source

Wood and woody biomass are expected to dominate the global bioenergy market. Woody biomass consists of trees or tree parts such as trunks, branches, bark, and crowns. It has a higher lignin content than herbaceous feedstock or tree leaves. This sort of feedstock is mostly utilized to generate heat and grid energy. Wood is an important fuel in many countries, particularly in developing countries for cooking and warmth. In 2018, wood and wood waste accounted for around 2% of total yearly energy consumption in the United States.

By Application

Because biofuels are largely used to generate heat, the heat generating category is expected to lead the market. This is especially true in Europe and the Middle East and Africa region. Bioenergy for heat in the European Union is expected to grow by 8% by 2023, reaching 3.5 exajoules (EJ). The majority of biomass heat is used in buildings. The amended Renewable Energy Directive (RED)'s voluntary aim for member states to boost renewable energy in heating and cooling by 1.3 percentage points per year should create chances for biomass heating. In 2018, the European Union (EU) consumed more than 15 million tonnes of wood pellets for heating uses.

Regional Insights

Asia Pacific is expected to lead the market over the projection period,. Emerging markets such as India and China are enacting stringent rules to reduce their carbon footprint, which is a key driver driving market growth. In Japan, the usage of wood for energy is growing, with forests covering two-thirds of the country and 100 million m3 of wood stocks growing each year. In 2018, 9 Mt of solid wood biomass was used for heat and power, with chips accounting for more than 75% of the total. The Asia Pacific region's largest users of this form of energy include China, India, Australia, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. Bioenergy is estimated to supply around half of the EU's 20% renewable energy generation objective by 2020. In addition, the 2009 EU Renewable Energy Directive mandated that the United Kingdom get 15% of its total gross final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020. The biggest countries that use bio-based energy sources include Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and Sweden. Europe currently has the highest number of COVID-19 cases, and the majority of European countries are in lockdown. As a result, the European market may contract in 2022 compared to 2021.
